I then rebooted and ran sfc, still with errors. I noticed the log file was MB, so thinking it just added on, I rebooted, deleted the log file and then ran sfc again.

I said my antivirus program I use is MSE. In online newsletters I’ve always heard good reports on that one. The other programs I mentioned are not configured as anti-virus programs, but I did a full system security scan using all those scanners – to make sure I got the infections checked that another tool might miss.

So I am confident that there are no viruses on my system since all scans found no areas on a full system scan of about 5. And MSE was and is the only anti-virus program I have running. When I have a client computer that presents SFC results of can not fix, my strategy is to re-install Windows. Option 2 below is likely your best alternative, but you will have at least 6 to 12 hours of Windows Updates to do after that. If it has been several years or more since your hard drive has been re-built, I would seriously consider that because it would give your system an amazing performance improvement.

That would be number 3 below. If you are going to do a re-install, you may be able to take your data off first. Remove the hard drive and put it into a USB external drive housing. Connect to a working PC, copy the data off. Always check to ensure the hard drive you are about to rebuild is actually sound from a hardware perspective. If you had or have Windows 10 installed. However, if you are unable to make the reversion back to Windows 7. You should do a complete re-install.

In this case, a System Repair disk is not going to help you. If you have a corrupted Windows 7 system , you are trying to recover, you want to try a System Repair disk to boot the PC.

When you are done you will have a very nice bit of insurance. Should you ever again need to re-build a corrupted system or replace a hard drive, you will have a precise duplicate of your system as it was at that point.

You can restore that image to a hard drive in about 20 minutes. Another great feature about using the image is that you do not need an install disk or a product key to do the re-install the next time. I’m not about to do a complete reinstall and loose all my application programs just because Microsoft issued bad updates that messed up sfc checks.

My computer has worked fine and all operating system and applications continue to work fine except for the desktop wallpaper being black.

Just because sfc has issues is not a reason to reinstall. Hopefully someone from MS support will offer to look at the log file to see exactly what errors sfc is having and fix those errors rather than a reinstall. I am looking for solutions to the problem. Erasing everything and starting over is not a solution to finding the problem.

Especially without even bothering to look at the log file that is supposed to list the errors that sfc can’t fix. Worst case I could load a system image from a few months ago, but that is only bypassing the problem and would take considerable work to get all up to date again. I’m hoping someone at MS will actually look into why these two issues exist and how to correct them.
